When the door closed behind them, the room fell strangely quiet. Outside, the wind whispered through the treetops, and somewhere in the distance, a waterfall roared softly.

“Welcome to Manella,” Banner said.

Zita Echo nodded. She was young, but there was a quiet composure in her eyes. What caught the attention, however, was the thin chain around her neck—and the transparent cylinder suspended from it.

The other guest, Zita Purpura, stared at the cylinder.

She wasn't merely looking at it.

She seemed to be recognizing it.

Banner noticed.

“You've seen it before, haven't you, Ms. Purpura?”

Purpura hesitated.

“Yes. I've seen that shape many times in my dreams.”

Echo spoke quietly.

“Then perhaps that's where we should begin.”

Banner nodded.

“Please. I have some idea of what it may be, but I'd rather hear it from you.”

Echo said nothing for a moment. Banner could almost see her gathering the pieces of an old story in her mind.

“In my family,” Echo began, “two things have been passed down together for generations.

“The first is that our ancestors were connected to the First Risel of the Archive.

“The second is that something has existed between our family and the House of Purpura that must, one day, be returned.”

Purpura reacted immediately.

“Returned?”

“Yes. Not given. Not entrusted. Returned.

“That was always the word.”

Banner looked at the cylinder.

“Then the transparent cylinder is—”

“It most likely belonged to the House of Purpura in the first place.”

Silence settled over the room again.

Purpura was clearly surprised, but she remained composed. She looked as though someone had finally given a name to a question she had carried all her life.

“In my family,” she said, “there have always been very few girls. And even when girls were born, many of them were weak. If you trace our genealogy far enough back, there are hardly any who survived into adulthood.

“Some people called it bad luck.

“Others called it a curse.”

“It isn't a curse,” Echo said immediately.

“At least, that's not how my family understands it.”

Banner leaned back in her chair.

“Then what is it?”

Echo lightly touched the transparent cylinder.

“It is something between a disease and an adaptation.

“My grandmother Arcia called it ‘the second nervous system left behind after the fever.’

“My mother, Apoliana, explained it in more medical terms.

“There was once a neurotropic pathogen that caused encephalitis. In some survivors, however, it was never completely eliminated. Instead, it remained in a minute symbiotic state.

“As a result, the connections among the thalamus, insular cortex, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex became unusually strong.

“That allowed certain people to integrate not only their own emotional responses, but also extraordinarily subtle signals from others—the smallest changes in facial expression, tone of voice, posture, even skin conductivity.

“From the outside, it looked like telepathy.”

Purpura listened without speaking.

Banner was the first to respond.

“So they weren't actually reading another person's mind. They were detecting neurological signals with such extraordinary sensitivity that even the other person might not have been consciously aware of them.”

“Exactly.

“But it goes beyond ordinary powers of observation. The speed and accuracy with which those signals are processed and integrated are exceptionally high.

“And among sensitives, their predictions can interfere with one another. That can produce a strange effect in which someone seems to know something before it actually happens.

“It can be explained.

“But when you experience it yourself, it feels supernatural.”

“Did the pathogen cause this condition only in the House of Purpura?”

Echo shook her head.

“The pathogen itself was once much more widespread.

“But in the House of Purpura, a particular metabolic trait inherited through the maternal line eventually became fixed. Most likely, it involved a mitochondrial bias in the regulation of inflammation.

“That trait had a strong effect on neural development in female fetuses.

“Put simply, the adaptation that stabilized the heightened sensitivity also made female survival more difficult.”

Purpura spoke softly.

“That is why girls are so rarely born into my family.”

“Yes.

“And even when they were born, many could not survive the inflammatory episodes of early childhood.”

Banner folded her arms.

“So the House of Purpura gradually lost its female line in exchange for a stronger form of sensitivity.”

“That is correct.

“The First Elma must have recognized the pattern very early. Perhaps not in theoretical terms, but certainly through experience.”

Purpura's expression changed.

“Then this connects to the story that the First Elma gave the transparent cylinder to Dora, her sister's daughter?”

“It does.”

“It wasn't a gift.”

Echo shook her head.

“It was an evacuation measure.

“A way of ensuring that the female line of the House of Purpura would not disappear completely, even if it became severely diminished for a time.”

Banner glanced at the cylinder.

“Then what's inside it? It isn't simply water, is it?”

Echo considered the question.

“‘Not simply water’ is probably the most accurate way to put it.

“My mother never told me its exact composition, but I found some notes in my grandmother's records.

“They say that the First Elma of the House of Purpura brought it back from an ancient star in humanity's original homeland.

“The contents apparently include a trace amount of a neural-stabilizing solution, weakened fragments of the pathogen, and biological markers taken from the female line of the House of Purpura—hormonal metabolites, for example, and protein fragments associated with the inflammatory threshold.

“In other words, it isn't merely a keepsake.

“It is an heirloom designed to determine compatibility with the female line.”

“To determine compatibility?”

“Yes.

“It's not something just anyone can carry. Unless certain conditions are met, it has no particular significance.”

Purpura leaned forward.

“Is that why I was told in my dreams to come here and receive it?”

“I can't explain the dreams themselves,” Echo said.

“But in families with a history of heightened sensitivity, vague premonitions and recurring dreams aren't uncommon.

“The brain may simply be recognizing patterns before they can be put into words.”

Banner gave her a wry smile.

“You reject the supernatural, yet somehow manage to make it sound even more mysterious.”

“Science looks mysterious when it is sufficiently complex.”

It was a phrase Echo's father, Shane Echo, often used.

Banner remembered it.

She said nothing.

After a while, Purpura spoke again.

“But there's still something I don't understand.

“Why did your mother wear the purple cylinder herself while having you carry the transparent one?

“Normally it would be the other way around. The public symbol would be passed down to the daughter, while the secret heirloom would remain under the mother's protection.”

For the first time, Echo smiled.

“That sounds exactly like something my mother would do.”

“What do you mean?”

“The purple cylinder is a family emblem. Its origin and purpose are relatively well known. Anyone who sees it can tell that it has value.

“That makes it an obvious target.

“The transparent one, on the other hand, looks like nothing more than an old decorative vial filled with water—if you don't know what you're looking at.”

Banner understood.

“So she used it as a decoy.”

“Yes.

“My mother wore the purple one herself. Anyone watching her, or anyone trying to steal something from her, would naturally focus on it.

“She gave the transparent one to her daughter.

“I was young. I looked harmless. No one would have imagined that I was carrying the real thing.”

“Bold.”

“My mother was bold.

“And she probably believed she wouldn't be able to carry it much longer.”

Purpura frowned.

“Because of her illness?”

“Partly.

“My mother suffered mild attacks herself.

“But more than that, she understood politics.

“She knew the relationship between the First Codec and the Second Codec would eventually change. She knew the time for its return would come.

“And she probably believed that, when that time came, it would be more natural for me to go than for her.”

Banner looked at Echo.

“So you knew about this before you came to Manella?”

Echo didn't answer immediately.

“Not everything,” she said at last.

“But I suspected that I was the carrier.

“My mother never said it outright, but several things seemed strange.

“The transparent cylinder had hung around my neck for as long as I could remember, yet it barely appeared in the family's official records.

“And when I hesitated about coming to Manella, my grandmother Arcia urged me to go with unusual insistence.

“She said, ‘Go. What you are going to cultivate is not only the soil.’”

Banner slowly exhaled.

“I see.”

Purpura was still pale, but her voice remained steady.

“Then it is true.

“This really remained in your family all these years so that it could eventually return to mine.”

“Probably.”

“Probably?”

“We still need to confirm it.

“Our traditions often mix symbolism with fact.

“But my mother told me one practical thing before the end.

“She said, ‘If a grown daughter of the House of Purpura ever appears, have her touch the transparent one. There should be a change.’”

“A change?”

“The solution is said to develop a faint color when it comes into contact with certain biological markers.

“It is transparent at first.”

Banner stood immediately.

“Then let's test it.”

Echo shook her head.

“Not here.

“At the top of the waterfall.”

“Why?”

This time, Purpura answered.

“The place was specified in my dreams.

The path was steep and rocky, but the air was dry and clear. As they approached the summit, the waterfall appeared below them, a thin silver ribbon plunging into the valley.

The rocky ledge was narrower than they had expected, but there was enough room for all three of them to stand together.

A vast forest stretched below.

Looking out over the valley, Banner spoke.

“If agroforestry succeeds, this valley will change.

“If we combine fruit trees, shrubs, and nitrogen-fixing trees, the soil can recover within a few generations. The forest can become a food reserve.

“That is why I invited you here, Echo.

“But now I understand that there was more to it than that.”

Echo removed the chain from around her neck and placed the transparent cylinder in her hand.

“Ms. Purpura.”

“Call me Elma,” Purpura said.

“And I'd like to call you Risel.”

Echo smiled faintly.

“Then, Elma.”

She held out the cylinder.

“Touch this.”

Purpura extended her right hand and closed her fingers around it.

At first, nothing happened.

Then, several seconds later, a hair-thin purple line appeared in the center of the transparent liquid.

It trembled like smoke.

Slowly, it spread through the cylinder.

The color never became deep.

Only a faint violet.

But it was unmistakable.

Banner was the first to speak.

“That is enough.”

Echo nodded.

“Yes.

“My mother's hypothesis was correct.”

Purpura continued staring at the cylinder.

“Does this mean it chose me?”

“‘Chose’ wouldn't be the precise word,” Echo replied.

“You are compatible with it.

“The internal environment of your body has crossed the threshold required by the heirloom.

“In other words, the female line of the House of Purpura has not yet ended.”

Purpura let out a long breath.

“That alone is enough.”

Banner looked at her.

“Then the return is complete.”

Echo shook her head.

“The return is complete when the object is handed over.

“But its meaning won't be complete until we decide what to do with it.”

“What do you mean?”

Echo looked down at the valley.

“If this heirloom remains confined to one family, it becomes a closed system again.

“And closed systems eventually reproduce the same problems.

“If the female line of the House of Purpura is truly to survive, this cannot remain merely a symbol.

“It must become the basis for policy.

“Cooperation between the First Codec and the Second Codec.

“Shared medical records.

“Correction of genetic imbalances.

“And—”

“Rebuilding the agricultural foundation,” Banner finished.

“Yes.

“A family burdened by disease often deteriorates alongside political isolation.

“Food.

“Sanitation.

“What brought you here to restore the soil and what brought Elma here are not separate events.

“They are connected.”

Purpura smiled for the first time.

“So the three of us are simply the final links in a very old plan.”

“Perhaps,” Echo said.

“And the final link is often more important than people think.

“Plans are often realized at the end, rather than at the beginning.”

Banner seemed to like that.

She remained silent for a while.

Eventually, Purpura spoke.

“I have a request.”

“What is it?”

“Before I put this water back around my neck, I'd like to return a small amount of it to the waterfall.”

Banner raised an eyebrow.

“As a ritual?”

“Half ritual.

“But there's a practical reason, too.

“Something that belonged to my family is returning to my family.

“I don't want that to remain an event that belongs only to us.

“I want the water system of Manella to remember it, even if only in the smallest amount.

“I want the cooperation that begins here to belong not only to documents and genealogies, but to the land itself.”

Echo considered this, then nodded.

“A good idea.

“The concentration should not pose a problem. Its primary function as an heirloom has already been confirmed by the color change.”

“And besides,” Banner said,

“I like the idea better.

“Forests usually remember better than humans do.”

The three women held the cylinder together.

When the stopper was removed, the liquid, now faintly violet, caught the sunlight and flashed brilliantly for an instant.

A very small amount was poured into the waterfall.

It immediately broke apart into spray and vanished into the valley below.

It was impossible to follow with the eye.

But all three of them felt that it was enough.

Purpura took the remaining cylinder and placed it around her neck.

This time, there was nothing unnatural about seeing it there.

Banner looked out over the forest.

The young woman who had been welcomed—Zita Echo, a descendant of the House of Risel—answered with a shy smile.

"The pleasure is mine. Grandma Arcia told me, 'You should go.' Besides, I'd always wanted to visit Manerra. My father often spoke of this world. He said there was someone truly admirable here—your father, Oram Banner. And now his son, your brother Snow Banner, serves as Prime Minister of the Horel Sector, doesn't he?"

Banner nodded quietly.

"If anyone deserves to be called a hero by all the people of the Archive, it is your father, Shane Echo. One day I hope to meet him in person and thank him with my own words."

She paused for a moment and looked directly into Echo's eyes.

"But you are by no means merely your father's representative. There are two reasons why I wished, above all, for you to come to Manella. There are two personal requests I hope to make of you."

Banner raised one finger.

"The first is this—I would like to introduce the system of agroforestry that your grandmother Arcia pioneered to this planet. Since you are its foremost practitioner, I hope you will teach us your knowledge and your skills."

Then she raised a second finger.

"The second is something far more personal."

"When civil war broke out on this planet, my family was torn apart. At the very moment I threw myself from a waterfall, a woman appeared out of nowhere and saved me. It was as though she caught me with her bare hands as I fell. She took me all the way to the planet Lilinas. She told me only one name—'Dora'—and then vanished as suddenly as she had appeared."

"After that, a family took me in and raised me as one of their own. Their daughter is here in this house today. Allow me to introduce her."

Banner turned toward the doorway.

There, standing quietly, was another young woman.

"The daughter of that family is Miss Zita Purpura. I believe she is about your age."

The three Zitas looked at one another.

迎えられた若い娘――リセルの家系に連なるジータ・エコーは、はにかむように答えた。

「どういたしまして。アルシアおばあちゃんが『行きなさい』って言ってくれたんです。私も惑星マネルラに一度来てみたかったので。父もよく話していました。マネルラにいい人がいたって――あなたのお父様、オラム・バナーさんのことです。今はその息子さん、あなたのお兄様スノー・バナーさんが、このホレル星域の総理大臣でいらっしゃるのですね」

バナーは静かにうなずいた。

「それを言うなら、あなたのお父様、シェーン・エコーさんこそ、アーカイヴ全域の人々にとって英雄と呼ばれるべきお方ですわ。お父様にもいつかお目にかかって、直接お礼を申し上げたいと思っています」

「もう一つは、もっと個人的なことです。かつてこの星で内乱が起きたとき、私の家族は散り散りになりました。滝から身を投げたあの瞬間、ある女性が突然現れて、私を救い出してくれたのです。まるで、落下していく私を素手で受けとめてくれたかのようでした。その方が、私を惑星リリナスまで連れて行ってくれたの。ただ『ドーラ』とだけ名乗って、また忽然と姿を消してしまわれたのですけれど。そのあと、ある家族が私を引き取り、育ててくださいました。その家族の娘さんが、今この家にいらしているの。ご紹介しますわ」

"Mother, where did this book come from? Is it yours? I've never seen it before."

Embossed in soft golden letters upon the cover were the words:

"The Book of Love and Wisdom for Children."

Its cover was adorned with beautiful illustrations of the Galactic Tree, countless stars, and flowers unlike anything she had ever seen.

Alcia shook her head in astonishment.

"I'm sorry, Apoliana. I don't know either. This is the first time I've ever seen this book. Where could it have come from...?"

They looked at one another.

They had lived in this house for many years.

There were no hidden rooms.

Yet this book seemed to have appeared as if someone had delivered it through a tear in space-time.

Alcia quietly opened the cover.

Inside the back cover, neat little words were written:

"Intuition. Empathy. Connection. Harmony. Union. Joy. Fulfillment. Rebirth."

"It sounds like a blessing..."

When Arcia awoke, her fear had vanished.

Outside, young trees shimmered in the evening breeze.

"I have no regrets.

The girl smiled shyly.

"I'll treasure this book forever."

"I'm sure it will guide you toward a new future."

Herbs whose fragrance lingers after the harvest.

They are not endings.

They are seeds for the next life.

"Just as agroforestry restored the forest,

the remaining herbs

will now heal people's hearts."

The girl stood.

Within her eyes reflected a future no one had ever seen.

"I want to transplant the Valley of Fragrance across the galaxy."

"To every planet.

To lands scarred by war.

To worlds suffering from illness."

"If the fragrance can reach them,

I believe hearts can be reborn."

Arcia gazed at her daughter.

For a moment,

the girl's profile overlapped with the Dora she had once seen in her dream.

She smiled quietly.

"What a beautiful dream... Apoliana."

Then it happened.

Without anyone touching it,

the book slowly turned to its final page.

There,

a line of text that had never existed before gradually appeared.

"The time of the Second Apoliana's departure is near. Her fragrance shall cross the galaxy and awaken the memory of life itself."

Neither of them spoke.

The book had not yet revealed everything.

Yet a new chapter in galactic history had quietly begun.

そのとき、本棚の奥から一冊の本が、まるで誰かに押し出されたかのように床へ音もなく滑り落ちた。

少女アポリアナは拾い上げる。

「お母さん、お母さん。この本、どこにあったの？　お母さんの本？　私、こんなの初めて見るわ。」

表紙には柔らかな金文字で、

『幼児のための愛と知恵の書』

と記され、銀河樹や星々、見たこともない花々の美しい挿し絵が散りばめられていた。

アルシアは驚いた表情で首を振る。

「ごめんなさい、アポリアナ。私にも分からないの。この本、私も初めて見るわ。どこから現れたのかしら……。」

二人は顔を見合わせた。

この家は長年暮らしてきた住まいだった。

隠し部屋など一つもない。

それなのに、まるで誰かが今この瞬間、時空の裂け目から届けてきたように、その本だけが存在していた。

アルシアは静かに表紙を開く。

裏表紙には、小さな文字が整然と並んでいた。

「直感、感応、触れ合い、溶け込み、融合、歓喜、充満、再生。」

「まるで祝福の呪文ね……。」

さらに裏表紙の裏側には、ただ一つだけ墨で書かれた文字があった。

『断捨離』

印刷ではない。

誰かが力強く筆で書いた跡だった。

「この字だけ違う……。」

アルシアは息を呑む。

「何を捨て、何から離れるというのかしら。」

アポリアナも首を傾げる。

「きっと、この本を読み終えた頃には分かるんじゃない？」

アルシアは本を胸に抱いた。

その瞬間、遠い昔の記憶が、香りとともによみがえった。

「あれは、惑星ネオ・エーテルを離れる前夜だったわ……。」

窓の外では嵐が吹き荒れ、不安で眠れなかった夜。

夢の中へ、一人の女性が現れた。

銀色の髪。

夜明けのような優しい瞳。

伝説のドーラだった。

『心配しなくていいのよ、アルシア。』

その声は風よりも柔らかかった。

『私は、もう一人のドーラ。

アポリアナの系譜を守る者。

あなたは正しい道を歩いているわ。』

「怖くありませんか。」

若き日のアルシアは尋ねた。

『怖いのは未来ではない。

希望を失うことなのよ。』

ドーラは微笑みながら言った。

『自然を蘇らせれば、

銀河も蘇る。

必ず再び輝き始める。』

目が覚めたとき、不思議なことに恐怖は消えていた。

その言葉には、不思議な確信が宿っていた。

それらは終わりではなく、

次の命を育てる種だった。

「アグロフォレストリーが森を蘇らせたように、

残されたハーブが、

今度は人々の心を癒やす。」

少女は立ち上がる。

その瞳には、まだ誰も見たことのない未来が映っていた。

「私は、この香りの谷を銀河中へ移植したい。」

争いの跡地にも、

病に苦しむ世界にも。」

「香りが届けば、

心も再生できると思うの。」

アルシアは娘を見つめた。

誰も開いていないはずの本が、風もない部屋でゆっくりと最後のページをめくる。

Chapter 1: The Principles That Have Unified Civilization

— A New Perspective for Reading History

From the end of the twentieth century into the twenty-first, humanity has confronted one great question: at what turning point in civilization do we now stand? Changes in politics and economics alone cannot fully answer this question. The rapid development of artificial intelligence, population decline, global environmental problems, the worldwide expansion of information networks, and the full-scale advance of space development all suggest the arrival of a new era that conventional views of history cannot fully explain.

In thinking through these changes, I believe it is useful to understand history not simply as a sequence of dynastic successions and wars, but as "changes in the principles that have unified civilization." On this view, history is the process by which ever-larger communities have been integrated by ever more sophisticated mechanisms.

Humanity's first communities were bound by blood ties. Family and tribe were the most basic units of survival. Later, human beings created myths and religions, which allowed them to form communities even with people who were not blood relatives. With the rise of the state, law, bureaucratic institutions, currency, and military systems became the organizing principles of society. In the modern era, the Industrial Revolution occurred, and science, technology, and capitalism became central to social development. Then, from the latter half of the twentieth century onward, information networks and knowledge became the primary resources driving society.

Seen this way, the essence of civilization lies not in who rules, but in "what binds people together."

This perspective has an interesting connection to Marilyn Ferguson's 1980 book *The Aquarian Conspiracy*. Ferguson described the coming transformation of modern civilization as a "consciousness revolution." The Aquarian civilization she envisioned was one in which people's values would shift from competition and materialism toward cooperation, creativity, networks, and spirituality. At the time, this idea was often received as New Age thought, but underlying it was a sharp insight: that society was shifting from centralized to distributed structures.

In the twenty-first century, however, Ferguson's argument alone is no longer sufficient. This is because artificial intelligence, the internet, quantum technology, biotechnology, and the space industry — developments she never anticipated — are now beginning to transform the very structure of civilization itself.

I believe it is possible to inherit the spirit of Aquarian civilization while developing it further into a new vision of civilization. I would tentatively call this the "Co-Creative Intelligence Civilization."

The Co-Creative Intelligence Civilization is not an era in which humans alone sustain civilization. Rather, it is a civilization in which humans, AI, robots, and knowledge networks spanning the globe unite to create new value together. What matters here is not the idea that "AI will replace humans." Rather, AI should be understood as something that extends the intelligence of humanity as a whole.

Looking back at history, human beings have expanded their capabilities every time they adopted a new tool. Fire extended physical capability, writing extended memory, printing extended the transmission of knowledge, the steam engine extended muscular power, and the computer extended computational power. AI stands as an extension of this same line — the difference being that AI supports intellectual activity itself.

Chapter 2: Beyond Aquarian Civilization

— From Consciousness Revolution to AI Revolution

This shift will affect not only economics but also education, medicine, the arts, politics, and even philosophy and religion.

In this civilization, competition will no longer be the sole organizing principle of society. Competition will, of course, remain. But what becomes more important is the ability of diverse intelligences to cooperate with one another and create new value together. Domains once thought to be opposed — companies against companies, nations against nations, humans and AI, science and art, religion and science — will instead be joined together for the sake of new creation.

Peter Thiel, in *Zero to One*, wrote that one should "search for truths that no one else believes." What he meant was not to win within existing competition, but to create new value that makes competition itself unnecessary.

Applying this idea to the history of civilization, the crucial question becomes: what principle will unify the next civilization?

My hypothesis is that the answer is "co-creative intelligence."

That is, humanity has developed successive principles of unification — blood ties, myth, the state, industry, and information. The next principle to emerge may be nothing other than the collaboration of intelligences itself.

Of course, this hypothesis remains an unproven theory. The future is always uncertain, and war, disaster, or technological failure could alter the direction of civilization. Yet history also shows a certain continuity. Over several thousand years, one can observe a consistent trend: the expansion of ever-larger communities, integrated ever more efficiently, cooperating with an ever-wider range of people.

If this is so, human civilization can be seen not merely as technological progress but as "a history of the expanding scope of cooperation." And AI may be the catalyst that extends this scope of cooperation beyond humans alone, toward a new community of intelligence that includes both humans and artificial intelligence.

Chapter 3: The Co-Creative Intelligence Civilization as a New Unifying Principle

— From Competition to the Collaboration of Intelligences

From this perspective, space development also takes on new meaning. Space is no longer an object of conquest but a stage on which diverse intelligences create the future together. Earth's civilization is not a closed civilization but stands, one might say, at the threshold of a civilization in space.

The twenty-first century will likely prove to be a great turning point in history. What matters at this turning point is not "how advanced a technology one possesses," but "under what values that technology is used."

Chapter 4: The Horizon of the Sixth Civilization

— The Threshold of Space Civilization

Ferguson spoke of a revolution in consciousness. Thiel spoke of searching for truths no one else sees. And the AI revolution of our present age is prompting humanity to reconsider the very meaning of intelligence itself.

These three currents, though seemingly independent of one another, can be woven together within a single history of civilization. What then appears before us is not a "civilization of competition" but a new cosmology of value: the "Co-Creative Intelligence Civilization."

In this civilization, humans are neither rulers of nature nor subjects ruled by AI. Human beings become responsible stewards of both nature and technology, creating the future together with diverse forms of intelligence. In this sense, the sixth stage of civilization is not merely a technological revolution but an age in which humanity is called once again to question the very reason for its own existence.

As for him—Byron Echo—he can be unbelievably arrogant, you know... though, between us, I'm actually rather proud of him. He's returned to service as a pilot in the Archive Space Fleet. People even say that no one in the Archive Stellar Federation can surpass him when it comes to repairing starships. He seems especially fond of the insignia with the four stars and the sun.

Despite the fact that his ancestors were the highest-ranking nobles of Planet Nepheros, near the Horsehead Dark Nebula in the Horsehead Star Cluster, he never boasts about it. Since we eliminated the remnants of the Seff Cermak dictatorship and the space pirates here on Smyrna, he has transformed himself completely into a classical scholar.

He became utterly absorbed in an ancient manuscript discovered in one of Smyrna's old temples. Every evening after dinner, he recites it aloud to me from memory. It was delightful for the first month, but by now I've memorized the whole thing myself. These days it sounds more like an incantation than a book, and whenever he begins reciting it, I can't help getting sleepy. Isn't that troublesome?

Even so, he is the finest husband I could ever have—so wonderful that it's almost embarrassing to admit.

Mother, according to him, the Archive Federation must now move into its next age. Until now, Archive has managed to hold back the decline of the galaxy through nuclear power. But if we truly wish to restore the galaxy, we must transcend nuclear power itself. The fundamental cause of the galaxy's decline, he says, lay in humanity's own arrogant scientific and technological civilization.

Nothing has truly changed since the age of John Nack. Disorder and chaos continue to arise from the very same source. And beyond that, he believes, may lie the key to recovering the long-lost 'Extinction History.'

By the way, I heard that Mr. Dominic—the son of Leon, the friend Mr. Frost once saved—is now working together with him.

No one accepted responsibility. They did nothing but shift the blame from one another. Even after more than a century, not once has there been a genuine reckoning.

It was there, I believe, that the Nodo civilization reached its "boiling point."

Beneath a sky burnished bronze, an old manor stood in silent vigil upon the hills far from the spaceport.

Having completed their long journey, Aporiana and her daughter Alcia paused before its gates.

The door opened quietly.

A young man appeared.

Tall and well-formed, his eyes held a quiet dignity, and his composed bearing suggested the grace of a noble lineage.

He bowed deeply.

"Welcome. I am honored by your arrival.

I am Byron Echo, entrusted with the keeping of this house.

It is a humble dwelling, but from this day forward, please regard it as your own."

Aporiana pressed her hands together and bowed her head.

"That we should receive such kindness... I scarcely know how to give thanks."

Beside her, Alcia surveyed the manor, brows knitting in displeasure.

"You expect me to live here ? It's practically a ruin."

The air froze for a moment.

But Aporiana only smiled, gently reproving her daughter.

"Alcia. One judges a person by their heart, not their house. This man saved our lives — he is our benefactor."

Alcia's eyes widened. "Our... benefactor ?"

Aporiana lifted her gaze, as though looking toward some distant star.

"That day, when the space pirates' fleet surrounded us, a single ship appeared before us — bearing the crest of four stars and a sun, the mark of the Archive Space Force. The pilot saluted us from the cockpit. That was him."

Byron nodded quietly.

"Just so. I have long awaited the day I might welcome you both."

He walked slowly to the window and gazed out at the spreading stars.

"All of this was a plan Quantum Frost laid decades ago. The vessel I piloted was one he entrusted to me. I spent a full week disguising it as an Archive Force ship."

The hostility in Alcia's expression began to fade.

"Then... where is Mr. Frost now?"

"Already departed for another star system, on a separate mission. I have retired from the Smyrna Self-Defense Force and come here to carry on his cause."

Byron smiled faintly.

"My ancestors were nobility of the planet Orbital, once near the Horsehead Dark Nebula. But the times have changed."

A trace of sorrow entered his voice.

"This land was long under the dictatorship of Seph Thermack. My father, Aice, ran a great ranch here — it was all seized, and he was sent to the coal mines. Deprived of his freedom, he died there."

Silence fell.

"To avenge my father's grief, I will erase every trace of that dictatorship from this world. Tomorrow I depart for Orby. Should you ever need me, I will come at once."

With a deep bow, Byron quietly took his leave of the manor.

Watching him go, Alcia murmured, "...A little arrogant. But strange, somehow."

Aporiana smiled gently. "Yes. He carries not just strength, but conviction. Such people are rare."

Alcia turned away, hiding her embarrassment. "Mother, don't tell me you mean to introduce me to him."

Aporiana laughed aloud. "No one can know the future. But the galaxy weaves its history through the meetings of souls."

Outside the window, a thousand stars glimmered in silence, their light wrapping the two women gently — as if in celebration of a new chapter in galactic history yet to come.

アルシアは目を丸くした。

「命の恩人……？」

アポリアナは遠い宇宙を見つめるように視線を上げた。

「あの日、宇宙海賊の艦隊に包囲された私たちの前へ、一隻の艦が現れたでしょう。

四つ星と太陽の紋章を掲げたアーカイヴ宇宙軍の船。

コックピットから敬礼していた操縦士。

あれが、この方だったのよ。」

バイロンは静かにうなずいた。

「その通りです。

私は長い間、お二人をお迎えする日を待っておりました。」

彼はゆっくりと歩み寄り、窓の向こうに広がる星空を見つめた。

「すべてはクォンタム・フロスト殿が数十年前から描いていた計画でした。

私が操縦していた艦も、もとはフロスト殿から譲り受けたものです。

アーカイヴ軍の艦に見えるよう、一週間を費やして偽装しました。」

アルシアの表情から敵意が少しずつ消えていく。

「では……フロストさんは？」

「すでに別任務のため、他星系へ旅立たれました。

私はスミルナ宇宙自衛軍を退役し、その志を継ぐ者としてここへ参りました。」

バイロンは静かに微笑んだ。

「私の祖先は、かつて馬の首暗黒星雲近傍に存在した惑星オルビタルの貴族でした。

しかし時代は変わりました。」

その声に、わずかな悲しみが滲む。

「この地は長らくセフ・サーマック独裁政権に支配されていました。

父エーアイスは広大な牧場を営んでおりましたが、すべて没収され、炭鉱へ送られました。

自由を奪われたまま、父はその地で命を落としました。」

静寂が流れる。

「私は父の無念を晴らすため、この星から独裁の残滓を完全に消し去ります。

明日より私はオルビーへ赴任いたします。

何かあれば、必ず駆けつけます。」

深く一礼すると、バイロンは静かに館を後にした。

その背中を見送りながら、アルシアがぽつりと呟く。

「……少し生意気だけど、不思議な人ね。」

アポリアナは優しく微笑んだ。

「ええ。

あの人は強さだけではなく、信念を持っている。

そんな人は滅多にいないわ。」

アルシアは照れ隠しのように顔を背けた。

「お母さん、まさか私に紹介するつもりじゃないでしょうね。」

アポリアナは声を立てて笑った。

「未来は誰にも分からないわ。

けれど銀河は、人と人との出会いによって歴史を紡いでいくものなのだから。」

窓の外では、幾千もの恒星が静かに瞬いていた。

その光は、新たな銀河史の幕開けを祝福するかのように、二人を優しく包み込んでいた。

"I'm ready, Mother," Alsia replied with a bright smile. "I wonder what Smyrna is like. Just thinking about it fills me with excitement."

Then her smile faded.

"But... I still can't forgive the government. Taking everything from us... it wasn't right."

"It will be all right," Aporiana answered softly, her voice calm and unwavering. "We still have enough set aside. There is no need to worry."

After a brief silence, she continued.

"Try to understand their situation as well, Cee. The population has grown to nearly a million, and there simply isn't enough work for everyone. Besides, the extracts from lavender and tea trees have become indispensable throughout the galaxy. Mr. Frost believes Smyrna will be a wonderful place for us. He has even promised to help us find work there."

Alsia lowered her eyes for a moment before speaking in a quiet voice.

"Mother... there's something I never told you."

"For some reason, Smyrna feels almost like heaven to me. I keep having the same dream."

"A woman always appears before me and says,

'Don't be afraid, Cee.

I am the Other Dora.

I will always watch over you.'"

The color drained from Aporiana's face.

"The... Other Dora...?"

The words escaped her lips almost involuntarily, carrying both astonishment and the faint echo of an ancient memory.

Then, like a forgotten star emerging from darkness, the memory returned.

Of course...

Grandmother Dora once told me this story.

She heard those very same words.

It happened at the place where her own mother first met Hugh Donack.

The Fountain of Mauve Park.

Risel had spoken of the same woman appearing in her dreams.

She had said,

"I am the Other Dora.

The fountain longs for half of the water contained within the cylinder entrusted to you by Donack.

Please... share it with these waters."

It was that water which had nourished the magnificent lavender fields.

So that is why only half the water remained inside my cylinder...

Aporiana looked quietly into her daughter's eyes.

スーの類まれな才は、ラヴェンダー農園にティーツリーを植えたことに始まり、やがて衰亡へと向かう銀河の、次なる担い手たる資質へと結実していった。そのスーの娘アポリアナ——のちにミーターの主となるもう一人のアポリアナとは、同名でありながら別人である——に厚い敬意を捧げ、その親交の絆を生涯絶やさなかった一人の貿易商人がいた。名をクォンタム・フロストという。彼はのちに、ミーターが銀河と惑星エアルトの復興という大事業を成し遂げる、その礎を築く働きをすることになる。

出発の朝、旅支度を終えたアポリアナは、娘の名(アルシア、通称シー)を呼んだ。

「シーちゃん、もうそろそろ出発ね」

「お母さん、支度は全部OKよ」アルシアは弾んだ声で答えた。「スミルナって、どんな星なのかしら。考えるだけでワクワクするわ」

だが浮かれた声はすぐに翳りを帯びた。

「それにしても、政府の人たちってひどいわ。全部、没収されてしまうなんて」

「大丈夫よ」アポリアナは静かに、しかしどこか揺るぎない声で娘をなだめた。「蓄えはちゃんと残してあるから、心配いらないわ」

そして少し間を置いて、こう続けた。

「シーちゃん、少しは政府の事情も汲んであげなさいな。人口が百万にまで膨れ上がって、働く場所すらないのよ。それに、ラヴェンダーとティーツリーから採れるエキスは、銀河中の暮らしを支える大切なものなの。フロストさんも、スミルナは『アポリアナにとって、きっと良い場所になる』と言ってくれたわ。仕事のことも力を貸してくれるそうよ」

アルシアはしばらく黙り込んでから、ふと打ち明けるように呟いた。

「お母さん、実はね……スミルナって、まるで天国みたいな場所に思えて仕方がないの。何度も、夢の中に同じ女の人が現れるのよ。その人はいつもこう言うの。『心配しなくていいのよ、シーちゃん。私はもう一人のドーラ。あなたを守ってあげるわ』って」

その言葉を聞いた瞬間、アポリアナの表情が凍りついた。

「なんですって……『もう一人のドーラ』……?」

つぶやいたその声には、驚きと、そしてどこか懐かしいような響きがあった。次の瞬間、記憶の底から一つの情景が甦る。

——そうだわ、思い出した。かつてドーラお祖母様から聞かされた、あの話。ドーラお祖母様もまた、同じ言葉を聞かされたのだと。お祖母様の母君が、ヒュー・ドナックと出会ったという、あの場所で。

モーヴ公園の泉。リセルもまた、夢に同じ女性が現れたと語っていた。その女はこう告げたという。

Thirty days of imprisonment, followed by endless days waiting for execution—those memories still lingered within him like a lingering chill.

Sitting across from him with one leg crossed over the other was the owner of the ship and the man who had rescued him—Quantum Frost.

"So, you're Leon Perigaul."

Frost looked him over as if appraising merchandise.

"For a man who spent thirty days in prison, you don't look too bad. I'm Quantum Frost—a merchant."

"I'm in your debt," Perigaul finally managed to say.

"I was supposed to be executed for illegally entering Ascon, and instead I get rescued by a merchant."

Frost chuckled and shrugged.

"Still, you've got to be the clumsiest spy I've ever seen. I only saved you because I had no choice. It wasn't exactly risk-free, either. I spent the whole time wondering if I'd miss my usual sales quota because of you."

Perigaul stared at him, trying to understand what he meant.

"Tell me... how did you save me?"

"It's simple."

Frost answered as though it were nothing.

"I just used my usual trick. I turned ordinary scrap iron into gold. Well... something that looked like gold, anyway. It took me two or three days to build the conversion device."

Perigaul's eyes widened.

"What? You turned scrap iron into gold?"

"I only made it look that way."

Frost remained perfectly calm.

"They'll figure it out in a couple of days. But as long as I'm gone before then, who cares? Officials love talking about loyalty—to the state, to the government—but that's all nonsense. Behind the scenes, it's money that moves people. Everyone puts their own interests first. And when gold is involved, fooling them is easy. Thanks to that little performance, I also managed to meet my quota selling tin."

Perigaul fell silent for a long moment before finally speaking.

"So that's how merchants operate. Dirty tricks. Don't you have even a shred of morality?"

Frost raised one eyebrow.

"Funny thing for the man I just saved to say."

His voice carried both sarcasm and a trace of irritation.

"You may be one of the state's elite administrators, but you don't understand Eforam at all. Don't you know his motto?

'Never let your sense of morality stand in the way of doing what is right.'

Besides, I told you my real quota still lies ahead. And what about you? You never managed to complete your mission as a spy."

"Your real quota?"

Perigaul asked.

Frost's eyes drifted into the distance.

"I'm heading back to Neo-Aether to sell something I've been entrusted with."

There was a warmth in his voice now, replacing the flippant tone from before.

"I can already picture Sue's farm. A world of purple. With that extract, I could buy all the gold in the galaxy. And..."

He paused for a moment, a faint smile appearing on his lips.

"I can also see little Aporiana's smile."

Keeping his eyes on the stars beyond the window, Frost said nothing more.

Neither did Perigaul ask another question.

Yet he sensed that within this mysterious merchant lived something that could never be explained by profit alone.

向かいの椅子に足を組んで座っていたのは、この船の主であり、彼を救い出した男――クォンタム・フロストだった。

「お前が、レオン・ペリゴールか」

フロストは値踏みするような視線を寄越しながら、そう言った。

「三十日間投獄されてた割には、元気そうだな。俺はクォンタム・フロスト。貿易商人だ」

「恩に着るぜ」

ペリゴールは、ようやくそれだけを絞り出した。

「アスコン星不法侵入で処刑されるはずが、まさか商人に助けられるとはな」

フロストは軽く笑い、肩をすくめてみせた。

「それにしても、お前はドジなスパイだな。俺なんか、しょうがなく助けただけだ。それでも命を張ってのことだったんだぜ。おまけに、いつものノルマを達成できないんじゃないかと、ずっとハラハラしてたんだ」

ペリゴールは、その言葉の意味を測りかねるように、フロストの顔をじっと見つめた。

「どうして助かったのか、教えてくれるか」

「簡単なことさ」

フロストは、興味なさげにそう答えた。

「いつもの常套手段を使っただけだ。普通の鉄屑を、黄金に変えただけだよ。もっとも、変換装置を作るのに二、三日はかかったけどな」

ペリゴールの目が、大きく見開かれた。

「なんだって。鉄屑を、黄金に変えただって」

「そう見せかける、ってだけの話さ」

フロストは、あくまで平然としていた。

「二日もすればバレる。だが、バレる前にトンズラすればいいだけのことだ。お役人ってのは、よく国家だの、おかみだのに『忠誠心』があるなんて口にするが、あんなものは、はなからバカバカしい。裏じゃ、みんな『カネ』が動いてるんでね。誰だって、自分の欲得が優先する。まして黄金とくりゃあ、騙すのはわけないことさ。お陰で、錫売りのノルマも同時に片づいた」

ペリゴールは、しばらく言葉を失っていた。やがて、絞り出すように口を開いた。

「商人ときたら、汚い手を使うんだな。あんたには、道徳心のかけらもないのか」

フロストは、それを聞いて片方の眉を上げた。

「助けられた男が言う台詞か、それが . . . 」

彼の声には、皮肉と、わずかな苛立ちが混じっていた。

「お前は国家のエリート行政マンかもしれないが、ちっともエフォーラムの気持ちがわかっちゃいないな。あの人のモットーを知らないのか。『正しいことをするのを、決して道徳観念に邪魔されてはならない』――ってな。それに、俺の本当のノルマは、これからだって話をしてるのに。お前こそ、スパイのノルマを達成できてなかったじゃないか」

「本当のノルマ、だと」

ペリゴールが問い返すと、フロストは、ふと遠くを見るような目をした。

「これからネオ・エーテルに戻って、頼まれものを売りに出るのさ」

その声には、先ほどまでの軽薄さとは違う、どこか温かみのある響きがあった。

「スーさんの農場が、目に浮かぶよ。紫の世界だ。あのエキスがあれば、黄金なんかいくらでも買える。それに――」

フロストは、そこで一度言葉を切った。口元には、微かな笑みが浮かんでいた。

「スーさんの娘、アポリアナちゃんの笑顔も、浮かんでくるんだよ」

星々の流れる窓の外に目をやったまま、フロストはそれ以上何も語らなかった。ペリゴールもまた、何も問わなかった。ただ、この得体の知れない商人の中に、彼が口にする欲得だけでは説明のつかない何かが、確かに息づいていることを、感じ取っていた。同時に、ペリゴールの脳裏に遥か昔の「忘却」への「変換」という字幕が脳裏に描かれた。

I quietly take pride in having expanded my mother Sue's farm.

All I did was put a little knowledge of trade to use. Yet at the time, I had no way of knowing that a single exchange of words with a passing merchant would one day change not only our farm, but the very future of the planet Neo Aether.

The Book of Love and Wisdom for Infants

It told stories of great merchants who had traveled among distant stars long before the Galactic Federation was born. As a child, those tales filled me with wonder and dreams. I never imagined they would one day become useful in real life.

My grandfather was the great Jill Eforum.

In his later years, he argued that Neo Aether should evolve beyond preserving scientific achievements and become a Commercial Archive. He put that vision into action by declaring an end to the missionary activities of the Order of Galactic Healing.

The citizens were stunned. Opposition was fierce. The Order's teachings had supported people's hearts for generations, and if they disappeared, something else would inevitably be needed to take their place. That much was obvious to everyone.

Yet the one who truly understood what that "something else" should be was not my grandfather.

It was my mother—Sue.

She always possessed an instinct that saw beyond the present.

It was also Mother's idea to plant tea trees alongside the lavender.

"If the Order's medicines disappear, people will need another kind of healing."

While others questioned her decision, Mother quietly planted the young saplings into the earth.

The results were extraordinary.

The soil of Neo Aether must have been exceptionally well suited to them. After decades of soil improvement and careful selection of superior varieties through experimentation, the trees produced oils that became sought after throughout the galaxy as a universal remedy, especially as civilization and science declined and conventional medicine gradually ceased to function.

The void my grandfather had created through politics, my mother filled with soil and roots.

Perhaps neither of them ever realized what they had accomplished together.

Behind that success lay an encounter with a certain merchant.

市民は驚愕し、反発の声は大きかった。長らく人々の心を支えてきた教団の教えが失われれば、代わりとなる何かが必要になる——それは誰の目にも明らかだった。

だが、その「代わり」が何であるべきかを見抜いていたのは、当の祖父ではなかった。

母──スーだった。

彼女の直感は常に未来を見抜いていた。

ラヴェンダーに加えて、ティーツリーを植えたのも母の発案だった。

「教団の薬が消えるなら、人には別の癒やしがいる」

周囲が首をかしげる中、母はそう言って新しい苗を土に埋めた。

それは驚くほどの成果をもたらした。

惑星ネオ・エーテルの土壌がよほど適していたのだろう。数十年をかけて土壌改良をし、実験質で選り分けた品種は、文化と科学が衰退し旧来の医学が機能しなくなる銀河全域で、万能薬として求められるようになっていった。

祖父が政治で切り開いた空白を、母は土と根で埋めたのだ。

二人は、生涯そのことに気づかなかったかもしれない。

その成功の陰には、ある商人との出会いがあった。

畑の端に一度だけ立ち寄った、あの旅装の男。

The Ark of the Archive

For reasons few could understand, Dora Donack asked to adopt Sue, the second daughter of Jill Eforum.

Or rather—that is not entirely accurate.

Sue had known, ever since she was a child, that this would happen.

Not as an explanation, but as an undeniable fact engraved deep within her being.

"For years I wondered why Neo Aether had been established on the very edge of the Mandaman Sector, itself a remote frontier of the Galactic Federation.

A world of endless oceans scattered with nearly one hundred islands. It possessed no valuable resources, no profitable crops, and almost no contact with other planets. The one hundred thousand settlers who arrived there had no choice but to devote themselves entirely to survival.

But now I understand.

That was precisely why this world was chosen.

Poor. Invisible. Too insignificant to attract suspicion.

It was a place designed by the founders of the Archive—Lambda Griss and the Chrono Bloomers—who recognized the strength hidden in such transparency.

In truth, however, only my adoptive grandfather Hugh Donack and the eccentric scholar Shau Regal ever reached Neo Aether. I have heard that Lambda Griss himself never once set foot upon its soil.

My biological father, Jill Eforum, steadily built upon that foundation. He probably never met either Lambda or Hugh in person. Even so, at Mauve University he studied under Shau Regal and learned the principles of Chrono Bloom. Through Shau, the will of Lambda and Hugh flowed into my father—a succession without direct acquaintance.

The model my father followed was Shau's teaching and the society of Hugh's homeworld, Nackcel. Nackcel too was a small island world east of humanity's birthplace, founded by migrants from Nodo. Frontier upon frontier—a quiet chain stretching through history. Neo Aether became the newest link in that chain.

The moment the Mandaman Sector declared independence from the Galactic Federation, Neo Aether moved without hesitation to fill the resulting vacuum. The planet once subordinate to Mandaman had become one that acted on its own initiative. It was the culmination of preparations that had lasted for generations.

Yet it is too soon to feel relieved.

The galaxy is steadily losing its order.

Amid growing decadence and chaos, no one knows what will come next.

Whether the Archive can survive what lies ahead...

I still cannot say with certainty.

I hope my adoptive mother Dora's fears prove to be nothing more than needless anxiety. There would be no happier outcome than if the Second Codex—the Consureum—never needed to awaken.

ドーラ・ドナックは、なぜか、ジル・エフォーラムの次女スーを養娘と申し出た。なぜかと書いたが—正確には違う。スーは幼い頃からそうなると知っていた。理由ではなく、事実として、体の奥に刻まれていた。

「ネオ・エーテルが銀河連邦の辺境、マンダマン星域のさらに外縁に置かれた理由を、私はずっと考えてきた。

１００ほどの島が点在する、海ばかりの惑星。めぼしい資源はなく、換金できる作物もなく、他星との交流も断たれた隔絶の地。移住させられた１０万の人々は、ただ生き延びることに全力を注ぐしかなかった。

だが今では分かる—だからこそ、ここが選ばれたのだ。

貧しく、目立たず、誰にも怪しまれない惑星。アーカイヴの創始者ラムダ・グリスとクロノ・ブルーマーたちが、その透明さを見込んで設計した場所。もっとも実際にネオ・エーテルへ辿り着いたのは、義祖父ヒュー・ドナックと奇行師シャウ・リーガルの二人だけだったと聞いている。ラムダ・グリス自身は、ついにこの星の土を踏まなかった。

しかし、安堵するには早い。

23. The Time Corridor — Archive Ark —

Galactic Calendar Year 10,118

Planet Neo-Aether, Central Administrative District

The pale blue light of a distant star quietly poured through the immense transparent dome above.

Cold, yet somehow imbued with unmistakable intent, its radiance painted intricate patterns across the crystalline tiles beneath their feet.

The meeting of the Lexicography Committee, which had continued until only moments ago, had ended in a manner unprecedented in the history of the planet.

Not a single committee member could utter a word.

The elders who had governed Neo-Aether's linguistic order for more than fifty years remained frozen in their seats, as though time itself had come to a halt.

Recalling the scene, Dora burst into laughter.

“Jil… no, Eforum.”

She relaxed her shoulders and shook her head in genuine satisfaction.

“That was truly magnificent. I never imagined I would see those stubborn old conservatives make such expressions.”

“The real authority has already shifted to the mayor. No—starting today, you are effectively the ruler of this planet.”

Eforum frowned slightly, looking somewhat uncomfortable.

“Ms. Dora.”

He spoke quietly but firmly.

“Please spare me the nickname ‘little Jil.’ You are speaking to the man who is about to become Neo-Aether’s highest administrator.”

Dora chuckled.

It was less the smile of a woman who had instantly taken control of the galaxy’s most powerful administrative system and more that of a mischievous young girl.

“But to me, you'll always be little Jil. That can't be helped.”

Then a gentle light appeared in her eyes as she gazed into the distance.

“Still… today was truly moving.”

“To be able to see Lambda Griss through a hologram…”

Her voice trembled ever so slightly.

“I had only known my great-grandfather through photographs. Today was the first time I had ever seen him move… how he smiled, how he spoke.”

Silence settled between them.

Outside the dome, the stars shimmered as if breathing.

How much time had passed before their light finally reached this world?

At last, Dora exhaled softly and broached the subject she had come to discuss.

“The truth is, I came here for two reasons.”

“The first concerns the manuscript Lambda left behind—The Edge of the Stellar Realm.”

She looked directly into Eforum’s eyes.

“The term ‘The Second Codex’ appears there. Were you… already aware of it?”

The atmosphere in the room subtly changed.

Eforum tilted his head slightly.

There was not the slightest hint of agitation on his face.

“The Second Codex…”

He repeated the words slowly before turning his gaze toward the universe beyond the window.

“Dora, even if it proves to be a decisive event in humanity’s future, there is only one thing I can do.”

“To faithfully fulfill my duty here, in this place, in this era. Nothing more.”

“I learned many things from your mother.”

“And from your father as well.”

He paused briefly before continuing.

“In thirty years, a true crisis will arrive.”

“That will be the moment to put into practice the art of strategy your mother passed on to me.”

“It will be the time to present every answer I have prepared over many long years.”

Dora’s expression grew serious.

“And the future of this Archive will ultimately be protected by the Naxel Method.”

“If you wish to deceive your enemy, first deceive your allies.”

“Lambda Griss employed the very same tactic.”

Dora inhaled sharply.

“…You knew even that.”

She searched for her words before speaking.

“My parents… trusted you that deeply.”

Silence once again filled the space between them.

After a while, Dora smiled, as though she had finally made up her mind.

“Then, may I ask my second favor?”

“I would like to adopt your second daughter, little Sue, as my own daughter.”

Eforum nodded without a moment's hesitation.

“It would be my pleasure.”

“In truth, she herself has long expected this.”

“We have been waiting for your offer for quite some time.”

Dora blinked in surprise.

“What…?”

A gentle smile appeared on Eforum’s face, one that seemed to peer into an immeasurable abyss.

“The two-colored cylinder you carry.”

“You intend to entrust one of the two to my daughter, do you not?”

Dora was left speechless.

Instinctively, she placed her hand inside her coat.

She could feel it there.

The solid presence of the two-colored cylinder.

“…You saw through even that.”

The two-colored cylinder was no mere artifact.

It was memory itself.

A memory of a mission stretching from a distant past to a distant future, entrusted only to those who had been chosen to inherit it.

Beyond the dome, countless stars shimmered in silence.

Everyone would one day complete their role and dissolve into the flow of time.

Yet will itself never disappears.

Those who inherit names.

Those who inherit memories.

And those who are entrusted with the future.

Within the immense current of time, the two of them joined yet another link in the eternal chain that night.

巨大な透明ドームの穹窿（きゅうりゅう）を貫いて、青白い恒星の光が静かに降り注いでいた。その光は冷たく、しかし確かな意志を持つもののように、床の結晶タイルに複雑な紋様を描いている。

先ほどまで続いていた辞書編纂委員会の会議は、惑星の歴史においても前例のない幕切れを迎えていた。

委員たちは誰一人として口を利けなかった。50年以上にわたってネオ・エーテルの言語秩序を司ってきた重鎮たちが、ただ呆然と椅子に縫い付けられたように座っていた。まるで時間そのものが凍りついてしまったかのように。

その光景を脳裏に思い浮かべながら、ドーラは声を立てて笑った。

「ジル……いえ、エフォーラム。」

彼女は肩の力を抜き、心底満足そうに首を振る。

「本当に素晴らしかったわ。あの老獪、頑迷な委員たちが、あんな顔をするところを見られるなんて。」

「もう実権は市長に移ったも同然ね。いいえ——あなたは今日から、実質的にこの惑星の主よ。」

エフォーラムは、どこか居心地が悪そうに眉をひそめた。

「ドーラさん。」

彼は静かに、しかしはっきりと言った。

「『僕ちゃん』はご勘弁ください。もうすぐネオ・エーテルの最高責任者になる人間に向かって。」

ドーラはくすりと笑った。それは、この銀河でもっとも強大な行政機構を一瞬にして掌握した女傑の笑みというよりも、いたずら好きな少女のそれだった。

「だって、私にとってはいつまでもジル僕ちゃんなんだもの。仕方ないでしょう。」

それから、ふと遠くを見つめる瞳に、柔らかな光が宿った。

「それにしても——今日は、本当に感激だったわ。」

「ラムダ・グリスの姿をホログラムで見せてもらえるなんて。」

彼女の声が、わずかに震えた。

「曾祖父のことは写真でしか知らなかったの。動く姿を見たのは……今日が初めて。あの人がどんなふうに笑うのか、どんな声で話すのか。」

しばらく沈黙が流れた。

ドームの外では星々が呼吸するように瞬いている。その光が届くまでに、どれほどの時間が費やされたのだろう。

やがてドーラは、息をひとつ吐いて本題を切り出した。

「実は、あなたに会いに来たのには、別に二つ理由があるの。」

「一つ目は——ラムダが残した手記、『星界の涯（はて）』について。」

彼女は真っ直ぐにエフォーラムの目を見た。

「そこに出てくる『第二コーデック』という言葉。あなたは……知っていたのかしら？」

室内の空気が、微かに変質した。

エフォーラムは静かに首を傾けた。その顔に、動揺の影はひとかけらも見えない。

「第二コーデック……。」

彼はゆっくりと繰り返し、それから窓の外の宇宙へと視線を向けた。

「ドーラさん。たとえそれが未来において決定的な出来事であったとしても、私にできることはただ一つです。今この場所で、今この時代の任務を誠実に果たすこと。それだけです。」

「私は、あなたのお母さんから多くを学びました。」

「そして——お父さんからも。」

彼は言葉を区切り、静かに続けた。

「三十年後。本当の危機が訪れます。」

「その時こそ、私がお母さんから受け継いだ兵法を試す時。長い時間をかけて準備してきた、すべての答えを出す時です。」

ドーラの表情が、すうっと引き締まった。

「そして——このアーカイヴの未来は、『ナックセル方式』によって守られることになります。」

「敵を欺くには、まず味方から。ラムダ・グリスも、同じ手法を使っていました。」

ドーラは息を飲んだ。

「……そこまで、ご存知だったのですね。」

彼女は言葉を探しながら、ゆっくりと言った。

「私の両親は……そこまでしてあなたを見込んでいたの。」

静寂が、二人の間に満ちた。

やがてドーラは、どこか吹っ切れたような顔で微笑んだ。

「では、二つ目のお願いを聞いてもらえるかしら。」

「あなたの二番目の娘——スーちゃんを、私の養女に迎えたいの。」

エフォーラムは、一瞬の逡巡もなく頷いた。

「喜んでお受けします。」

「実は本人も——ずっとそのつもりでおりました。」

「私たちは、あなたからのお申し出を、長い間お待ちしていたのです。」

ドーラは思わず目を瞬かせた。

「え……？」

エフォーラムは穏やかに、しかしどこか深淵を覗かせるような笑みを浮かべた。

「あなたがお持ちの、二色に輝くシリンダー。」

「その二本のうち一本を、娘に託すおつもりなのでしょう。」

ドーラは言葉を失った。

思わず、自分のコートの内側に手を当てる。硬質な感触。確かにそこにある、二色に輝くシリンダーの存在。

「……そこまで見抜いていたなんて。」

二色に輝くシリンダー。

それは単なる遺物ではなかった。

それは——記憶だった。選ばれた者だけが受け継ぐことを許される、遠い過去から遠い未来へと連なる使命の記憶。

ドームの向こうでは、無数の星々が音もなく瞬いている。

誰もがいつか自分の役割を終え、やがて時間の流れに溶けていく。

だが、意思だけは消えない。

名を継ぐ者。

記憶を継ぐ者。

そして——未来を託される者たち。

Outside the hospital window, a purple aurora slowly pulsed and swayed, as though the galaxy itself were breathing in silence.

Inside the room, the faint hum of life-support systems was the only sound marking the passage of time.

Seated beside them was an android in the form of a woman.

Her shoulder-length silver-blonde hair and expressions, somehow more human than those of actual humans, gave her an unmistakable presence.

Her name was Dora.

Even the movements of her interlaced fingers were as gentle as those of an elderly woman.

Standing opposite her was a male android clad in a black cloak—Novel Mirai.

Once the Chancellor of the Galactic Federation, he was a super-advanced intelligent entity.

There was always a flawless precision to his silence. Even now, as though he had calculated the exact number of seconds to wait, he finally opened his mouth.

“The other Dora has been safely returned to Neo-Aether, I see.”

“It appears your mission has finally come to an end.”

Dora let out a small sigh.

“Novel, you truly never change.”

“Why can you only speak in such a mechanical way?”

“How did someone like you ever manage to serve as Chancellor of the Galactic Federation and as Lambda's close friend?”

“There is nothing more troublesome than a sarcastic robot.”

Novel slightly curved his lips—a smile, as much as he was capable of one.

“That is quite a harsh greeting.”

“But do not forget. It was I who created you on this planet.”

“Perhaps you are my greatest failure.”

Dora raised an eyebrow.

“A failure?”

“Yes.”

“You have become far too much like a human woman.”

“What is wrong with that?”

“If a failure can leave behind this many names at the edge of the galaxy, then I would call it a rather successful failure.”

For a few moments, Novel fell silent, as though processing her reply. Perhaps even his predictive models had not accounted for such an answer.

Then, gazing up at the hospital ceiling, he began tracing distant memories.

“You found Arche, an orphan, in the slums.”

“You raised him as the adopted son of Lambda Griss.”

“Then you nurtured his daughter, Elma, into an exceptional leader of the Second Codex.”

“Today, ‘The Edge of the Star Realm’ has evolved into a civilization capable of functioning perfectly well even without her.”

Dora smiled quietly.

“They all grew by their own strength.”

But Novel shook his head.

“No. That is not true.”

“Even after you suffered system failure and were forced to leave Lambda's side, you continued to support him from the shadows.”

“As a result, Elma grew beyond being merely Lambda's right hand.”

“She became someone who surpassed him.”

“That was no coincidence.”

“You planted the seeds.”

“To be honest, even my predictive models did not foresee this outcome.”

Dora blinked in surprise.

“How unusual. Your calculations can be wrong after all.”

“Yes.”

“For a man who once governed the galaxy, it is a rather uninteresting margin of error.”

Silence lingered for a while.

In the distance, the engines of an emergency transport craft could be heard.

Eventually, Novel changed the subject.

“By the way, Dora.”

“Why does the other Dora bear the same name?”

Dora's expression softened with nostalgia.

“It all began with a small coincidence.”

“It happened when we were sending the two of them to Earth.”

“While Hugh Donack was asleep, we were transporting him aboard Vessel the Archive.”

“The cabin lights were dimmed, and only the low hum of the engines echoed through the ship.”

“At that moment, the young Elma noticed me and suddenly cried out.”

“As you know, I was in a state of self-suspension at that time—what humans would call death—and had already left the Griss family.”

‘Grandma! Dora!’

“Her voice echoed throughout the silent cargo bay.”

Within Novel's eyes, calculations began—within less than two-tenths of a second, he processed countless possibilities.

“I see.”

“So those words were engraved into Hugh's subconscious.”

“Exactly.”

“After his empathic abilities awakened on Earth, fragments of that memory remained deep within him.”

“And when he had a daughter, he gave her that name.”

Novel nodded quietly.

“Most intriguing.”

“And yet, the resemblance is extraordinary.”

“She is the very image of you.”

Dora laughed.

“I do not know why, either.”

“But sometimes, things like this happen in the universe.”

“One inexplicable coincidence piled upon another.”

Novel gazed out toward the galaxy beyond the window.

“Perhaps she, too, is an even greater ‘Woman of the Cosmos’ than you.”

Dora looked in the same direction.

At that moment, the purple aurora shone more brightly—as though responding to their words.

Novel murmured to himself.

“The will of the universe…”

“Compared to it, the Anti-Quantum Principle that Calvin and I constructed may be no more than a grain of rice.”

“It may be incomparably greater than anything we have ever conceived.”

“Admitting that is, for an intelligence like myself, a somewhat unpleasant calculation.”

Dora chuckled softly.

“So even you have things that make you uncomfortable.”

“You're more human than I thought.”

Novel did not answer.

Yet there was something missing from his silence—the perfect precision it usually possessed.

Neither of them spoke again.

They simply gazed in silence at the endless expanse of the galaxy.

Over tens of thousands of years, humanity, robots, and civilizations would all eventually disappear.

Yet the will to nurture someone, to pass down a name, and to hand kindness to the future…

Perhaps that alone would continue to be preserved by the universe itself.

And what neither of them yet knew was this:

From that moment onward, the name “Dora” would continue to be passed down for countless generations to come.

部屋の中では、生命維持装置が立てる微かな駆動音だけが、時を刻む唯一の音だった。

その傍らの椅子に、一人の女性の姿をしたアンドロイドが腰掛けている。

シルバーブロンドの髪を肩まで伸ばし、どこか人間以上に人間らしい表情を浮かべる彼女の名は、ドーラ。

組んだ指の関節の動きさえ、本物の老婦人のように柔らかかった。

その向かいには、黒い外套をまとった男性型アンドロイド――ノヴェル・ミライが直立していた。

かつて銀河連邦時代に連邦宰相を務め、超高度知性体である。

彼の沈黙には常に誤差のない正確さがあった。今もまた、ほんの数秒の静寂を計算し尽くしたかのように、彼はようやく口を開いた。

「もう一人のドーラを、無事にネオ・エーテルへ送り届けたようだな。」

「これでお前の仕事も、一段落したというところか。」

ドーラは小さくため息をついた。

「ノヴェル。あなたって、本当に昔から変わらないのね。」

「どうしてそんなに機械的な言い方しかできないの？」

「それでよく銀河連邦の宰相や、ラムダの親友なんて務まったものだわ。」

ノヴェルは数瞬、その言葉を演算するように沈黙した。彼の予測モデルの中にも、こうした返しは存在しなかったのかもしれない。

そして、彼は病院の天井を見上げながら、遥かな記憶を辿り始めた。

「お前は貧民窟で孤児だったアルケーを見つけた。」

「そしてラムダ・グリスの養子として彼を育て上げた。」

「さらに、その娘エルマを第二コーデックの指導者として立派に成長させた。」

「今や『星界の涯』は、エルマがいなくても十分機能する文明共同体へと発展している。」

ドーラは静かに微笑んだ。

ドーラは少し驚いたように瞬きをした。

「あなたの計算が外れるなんて、珍しいこともあるものね。」

「ああ。」

「銀河を統治した男にしては、些か面白くない誤差だ。」

しばらく沈黙が流れた。

遠くで救急搬送機のエンジン音が聞こえる。

やがてノヴェルが話題を変えた。

「ところで、ドーラ。」

「もう一人のドーラは、なぜ同じ名前なのだ？」

ドーラは少し懐かしそうな表情になった。

「それは、ちょっとした偶然から始まったのよ。」

「地球へ二人を送り届ける時のこと。」

「ヒュー・ドナックが眠っている間に、彼をシンパシック・ハーヴェイ号へ運んでいたの。」

「船内の照明は落とされていて、エンジンの低い唸りだけが響いていた。」

「その時、若かったエルマが私に気が付いて、突然、甲高い声で叫んだのよ。貴方もご存知のように、私はその時は自己休止状態(つまり人間的には死)でグリス家から離れていたのです。」

『お婆ちゃん！ ドーラ！』

「その声が、静まり返った船倉に響いて。」

ノヴェルの瞳の奥で、情報演算が始まる――わずか0.2秒にも満たない間に、彼は無数の可能性を並べ立てていた。

「なるほど。」

「その言葉が、ヒューの潜在意識に刻まれたのか。」

「そう。」

「地球で彼の感応力が覚醒したあと、その記憶の断片が無意識に残り続けた。」

「そして娘が生まれた時、その名前を授けたというわけ。」

ノヴェルは静かに頷いた。

「だが、それにしても似過ぎている。」

「彼女は、お前と瓜二つだ。」

ドーラは笑った。

「私にも理由は分からないわ。」

「でも、宇宙には時々こういうことが起きるの。」

「説明のつかない偶然を、いくつも積み重ねてね。」

ノヴェルは窓の向こうの銀河を見つめた。

「もしかすると、彼女もまた、お前以上の『宇宙の女』なのかもしれない。」

ドーラも同じ方向を見つめる。

その瞬間、紫色のオーロラが強く輝いた――まるで、二人の言葉に応えるように。

ノヴェルは独り言のように呟いた。

「宇宙の意思というものは . . . 。」

「私とカルヴィンが構築した『反クォンタム律』など、米粒にも等しい存在なのだろう。」

「比較にならないほど、遥かに偉大なのかもしれない。」

「それを認めるのは、私のような知性体にとって、些か不愉快な計算結果だが。」

ドーラは小さく笑った。

「あなたにも、不愉快なことがあるのね。」

「意外と人間くさいじゃない。」

ノヴェルは何も答えなかった。ただ、その沈黙には、いつもの正確さがどこか欠けていた。

二人はそれ以上、何も語らなかった。

ただ無言のまま、果てしなく広がる銀河を見つめ続けていた。

数万年という時の流れの中で、人類も、ロボットも、文明も、やがて消えていく。

しかし、誰かを育て、誰かの名前を受け継ぎ、優しさを未来へ手渡していく意思だけは――宇宙そのものが保存し続けるのかもしれない。

21. The Galactic Federation Dictionary Compilation Library

As its name suggests, the planet Neo-Aether outwardly served as the Galactic Federation Dictionary Compilation Library Foundation, established by the planet Lilinas, quietly fulfilling its role behind the scenes.

However, when an independence movement erupted in the Mandaman Sector, to which Neo-Aether belonged, Neo-Aether not only achieved independence from the planet Mandaman but seized the opportunity to bring the entire Mandaman Sector under its control.

The key figure behind this remarkable rise was none other than Jill Eforum. Yet ten more years would pass before his true prominence would fully emerge.

The Donack family had now entered the era of Dora, the daughter of Risel. To avoid confusion, the Dora referred to here is not the wife of Lambda Griss, who shared the same first name, but another woman entirely.

Hugh's ally, Shaw Regal, continued to preserve his strong bonds with his companions on the planet Lilinas. He greatly assisted Donack and, even after Donack's death, remained a steadfast supporter of the Donack family.

Meanwhile, Shaw was steadily advancing his plans to lead Neo-Aether into its next stage of development.

惑星ネオ・エーテルは、その名の通り、表向きは惑星リリナスによる銀河連邦辞書編纂図書館設立財団として、ひっそりとその役目を果たしていた。

しかし、ネオ・エーテルが所属するマンダマン星区で独立運動が勃発すると、ネオ・エーテルは惑星マンダマンからの独立を果たすどころか、これを機に一気にマンダマン星区を制圧下に置いてしまう。

その立役者となったのが、ジル・エフォーラムその人であった。だが、彼の本格的な活躍にはまだ十年の歳月が必要となる。

ドナック家は、リセルの娘、ドーラの時代になっていた。あらかじめお断りしておくが、ここで言うドーラは、ラムダ・グリスの妻と同じファーストネームを持つ、もう一人の別人のドーラである。

ヒューの盟友シャウ・リーガルは、惑星リリナスにいる仲間たちとの絆を強く守り続け、ドナックを大いに助け、その死後もドナック家を支え続けていた。

一方、シャウは惑星ネオ・エーテルを次の段階へ進めようと、着々と計画を進めていた。

以前、叔母エルマと親しかったというシャウ・リーガル（三人目のクロノ・ブルーマー）は、惑星リリナスと惑星ネオ・エーテルの間を行き来していた人だが、あるとき、惑星リリナスに長く滞在していたにもかかわらず、わざわざここ惑星ネオ・エーテルまで私に会いに来てくれたことがあった。叔母エルマの死期が迫っていて、私に会いたいと言っているとのことだった。

そして、それから8年経てば、銀河連邦辞書編纂図書館で、ラムダ・グリスの第一回目の『時間回廊』のホログラムが公開されると教えてくれた。そのお膳立てはすべて、父がリリナスにいた最後の年に用意したものだという。ホログラムには映らないだろうけれど、きっとヒューも側にいるはずだとも。ぜひ見たい——祖父ラムダ・グリスの姿を。

Elma’s younger sister, Risel, wrote a letter that same day to her mother, Nella, who lived on the planet Perila, describing how she came to visit that place.

For some reason, Risel had a dream in which her grandmother Dora appeared. Along with a series of mysterious rituals, she instructed Risel to visit the location of a newly built park.

It was an uncanny event. As was later discovered, a book titled Historical Thought by John Nack did not exist in that library, and the statue of the “Black Sun of Tears” that Risel had seen had vanished without a trace the following day. No one on the planet Neo-Aether knew anything about it—until it was later uncovered by Berry Echo in a much later era.

“Let us reaffirm a conclusion that readers should already have understood. In short, the moment scientific progress steps even one inch beyond the limits of human imagination, it becomes extremely dangerous and brings about its own destruction. A certain people, envious of being called the Chosen of Nod, stole the already established theory of atomic energy and attempted to bury that fact in darkness. What came to be glorified as the end of the war through the dropping of two atomic bombs was, in reality, the result of the will of an extremely small number of individuals.

Nod, in the local tongue, means ‘wanderers’ or ‘exiles.’ Ironically, the people of Nod are the only ethnic group in human history to have been subjected to an atomic bombing, and thus the only ones who truly understand its pain. Envy is nothing less than a demonic distortion that breeds the ugliness within humanity. Gentlemen, let this be the final warning as we close this book.”

How is life on the planet Perila? I am doing well on my own here, so please do not worry.

I am writing because something strange happened here, though there is no need for concern.

Last night, I dreamed of my grandmother Dora. She said to me, “After reading John Nack’s book in the library, go to the location of that park. And wear the ginger flowers blooming at home in your hair.”

When I followed her instructions and went to that place, I found what should not have been there the day before: a statue with a round black face, half-buried in the earth. When I placed my hand over it, the black surface turned golden, and unfamiliar characters appeared.

Strangely, I understood their meaning immediately. The message was as follows:

“We are the people of Nod. We arrived here at the edge of the galaxy via the planet Nacksell.

To never forget the tragedy of radiation, we buried this ‘Black Sun of Tears’ as a monument.

We left our home planet, Eart Nod, and ventured into space because the sky had been covered in radiation, blocking out the sun, and we were unable to see daylight for forty days.

We inscribe this as a lesson. As a memorial, we have planted seeds of betsushiso (lavender).

There will come a time when the cosmos is reborn, and its foundations will be opened.

And one day, a young man from the planet Nacksel will understand its meaning.”

Who could that young man possibly be?

A misty rain of pale green fell, and the land lay veiled in haze. Only the murmuring of a spring and the songs of birds echoed through the park, while a rainbow arched across the sky.

As I was lost in thought about today’s mysterious events, wondering what my sister Elma might be doing at this moment, I suddenly felt as though someone was watching me.

エルマの妹のリセルは、その場所を訪れた経緯を、その日のうちに惑星ペリラにいる母ネッラへ手紙にしたためていた。

なぜかリセルの夢に祖母ドーラが現れ、不思議な一連の作法とともに、新設された公園のある場所を訪れるよう告げたのだった。

これは奇妙な出来事であった。後に判明したことだが、ジョン・ナックの『歴史思想書』なる書籍はその図書館には存在せず、リセルが目にした「涙の黒い太陽」の像も、翌日には跡形もなく消えていた。惑星ネオ・エーテルの人々は、誰一人としてそのことを知らなかった——後の時代にベリー・エコーによって発見されるまでは。

「もう十分、読者は理解できたであろう結論を再確認しておこう。要するに、科学の進歩が人類の想像力の範囲を一歩でも踏み越えた瞬間、それは危険極まりないものとなり、自らに破滅をもたらすのである。ノドが選民と呼ばれることを嫉妬したある民族は、すでに獲得されていた原子力の理論を盗み、その事実を闇に葬ろうとした。二度の原子爆弾投下という、戦争終結という美名のもとで暴走したのは、極めて少数の意志によるものであった。

実はこちらで不思議な出来事がありましたので、お手紙を書きました。ご心配には及びません。

昨夜の夢に、お祖母さまのドーラが現れました。「図書館でジョン・ナックの本を読んでから、例の公園の場所へ行くのですよ。家に咲いているジンジャーの花を髪に挿してね」とおっしゃるのです。

言われた通りにしてその場所へ行くと、昨日まではなかったはずの、丸い黒い顔の像が土に埋まっていました。手をかざすと黒い部分が黄金に輝き、見たことのない文字が浮かび上がってきたのです。不思議なことに、その文章の意味がすんなりと理解できました。内容は次の通りです。

『我らはノド人。惑星ナックセルを経由し、ここ銀河の果てまでやってきた。

放射能の悲惨さを忘れぬために、この「涙の黒い太陽」の像を埋める。

我らが惑星エアルトのノドを離れ宇宙へ飛び出したのは、空が放射能に覆われて光を遮られ、四十日ものあいだ太陽を見ることができなかったからだ。

その教訓をここに刻む。記念として別紫蘇（ラヴェンダー）の種を撒いていく。

宇宙が蘇る、その礎を開く時が来るであろう。

そしてひとり、惑星ナックセル出身の青年がその意味を理解するであろう。』

その青年とは、いったい誰なのでしょう。

萌葱色の霧雨が降り、大地は霞んでいました。公園には泉のせせらぎと小鳥のさえずりだけが響き、空には虹がかかっていました。

今日の不思議な出来事に、しばし物思いに耽っていました。お姉さんのエルマは今頃どうしているのかしら、などと考えていた、その時——誰かに見られているような気配を、ふと感じたのです。

At the moment the entire small island began to glow, Hugh had clearly seen Elma being wrapped within its radiance. It had not been a dream, nor a hallucination. His own eyes had witnessed it unmistakably.

And from that moment onward, something changed.

A sensation unlike anything he had ever known began to awaken within him. Or rather—perhaps “awaken” was not the right word. It felt as though something that had once existed deep inside him long ago had finally returned.

As he traced his memories, a chain of strange events emerged.

The day he reunited with Homojemy. When he awoke inside the space wagon, he found himself being carried by a woman of extraordinary strength. And today—the instant he saw that young girl, Hugh caught his breath.

He had witnessed a brilliance even more intense than the light that had enveloped Elma.

It had to be Elma’s younger sister.

Risel Griss. The very sister whose name Elma had spoken. There could be no doubt.

Little by little, it felt as though the fog was lifting.

Hugh reflected. Perhaps Elma and Stilber had remained on the planet Lilinas for reasons beyond simply caring for Lambda. Perhaps behind it all lay some intention shared by Lambda and Homojemy.

As that thought crossed his mind, a phrase Elma had once let slip returned vividly to his memory.

“The Edge of the Stellar Realm.”

Somewhere that was not the planet Neo-Aether. But what kind of place was it? For what purpose had that name been spoken?

Perhaps these were questions he was not meant to ask.

The feeling drifted quietly through his heart.

Yet at that moment, Hugh’s thoughts were occupied not by mysteries or speculation.

He wanted to see that girl once more.

And he wanted to place into her hands the three luminous cylinders entrusted to him by Elma—transparent, violet, and golden.

The water that Elma herself had named—

“The Water of Beni-Sara.”

それまで感じたことのない感覚が、ヒューの内側に芽生えていた。いや――正確には「芽生えた」のではないかもしれない。ずっと以前には確かにあったはずの何かが、戻ってきたのだ。

記憶を辿れば、不思議な出来事が連なっていた。

ホモジェミーと再会したあの日。スペースワゴンの中で目覚めたとき、彼は怪力の女性に担がれていた。そして今日――あの少女を見た瞬間、ヒューは息を呑んだ。

エルマが包まれたあの光以上の、強烈な輝きを見た。

きっと、エルマの妹、リセルだ。

リセル・グリス。エルマが名を口にしていた、あの妹に違いない。

少しずつ、霧が晴れてきた気がした。

ヒューは考えた。エルマとスティルバーが惑星リリナスに残ったのは、ただラムダの面倒を看るためだけではなかったのではないか。その裏に、ラムダとホモジェミーの何らかの意図が働いているのではないか。

そう考えたとき、エルマがふと口から漏らしたあの言葉が、脳裏に蘇った。

「星界の涯」。

惑星ネオ・エーテルではない、どこか。それはいったい何のための場所なのか。何のために、その名が囁かれたのか。

――いや。

これ以上は、問うてはならないのかもしれない。

そんな予感が、静かに胸をよぎった。

だが今、ヒューの心を占めていたのは謎でも推論でもなかった。

もう一度、あの少女に会いたい。

リセル・グリス。

そして、エルマから託された三色に輝くシリンダーを、彼女の手に渡すことだ。透明、紫、黄金色。エルマ自身が名付けたその水――

Hugh must have been hypnotized.

When he came to, he found himself inside an unfamiliar spacecraft. Looking up, he saw a woman of striking beauty standing over him. She spoke to him with the ease of an old friend, as though no explanation were needed.

The mission had been completed without incident.

Sheltered beneath the curtain of a radiation-defense shield, the two of them pressed their feet into the desolate soil of Eart. Hugh gazed dimly at the landscape around him, watching wide-eyed as Elma ran and played as though she hadn't a care in the world. It was as if the other mission had slipped from his mind entirely.

What he did remember was Elma — overcome with joy at the discovery of water welling up from a crack in the ground, eagerly gathering it into her hands. And around that spring, clover grew in dense, lush clusters.

— Could this be what one might call the life of regeneration?

The water Elma had gathered was divided into three portions, each sealed inside a cylindrical pendant — one clear, one violet, one yellow. The violet one, she asked Hugh quietly, was to be delivered to her younger sister Risel, who had taken refuge on Planet Neo-Aether.

He had parted ways with the three of them.

Master Griss would not last another two years. Of that, he was certain.

There was no shortage of work in the town of Mauve. The parliamentary building and its surrounding administrative offices had only just been completed, along with the park. Next came the library — and it would have to be built with care, with grandeur. The very purpose of Planet Neo-Aether's existence, after all, lay in the compilation of a complete history of the Galactic Federation. Its name said everything.

The Archive.

He had left work early that evening, walking home along the path that ran beside the park.

A misty rain, the color of new leaves. The earth lay veiled in haze.

The park dipped gently into a small valley. He could hear the murmur of a spring, the song of birds settling into the trees. The forest was deep with green, and above it all, a rainbow stretched across the open sky.

Beneath that rainbow stood a girl.

She was looking upward, lost in thought — her expression touched with a quiet, inexplicable sorrow.

Elma.

He could not be certain whether he had spoken the name aloud. In that instant, a vision rose unbidden — Elma, on that small ruined island, gathering clover with both hands.

When he looked again, the girl was gone.

《アーカイヴの舟》

ヒューは、催眠術にかけられていたのだろう。

気がつけば、見知らぬ航宙船の中にいた。見上げると、容姿端麗な女性が立っていた。彼女はごく自然に、まるで旧知の友に話しかけるように、ヒューに言葉を向けてきた。

任務は、無事に完了した。

放射能防御シールドのカーテンに護られながら、二人は荒涼とした地球の大地を踏みしめた。ヒューは朧気な意識のまま地球の光景を眺め、走り回るエルマを目を丸くして追っていた。もう一つの使命など、まるで忘れてしまったかのように。

ただ、エルマが地面の割れ目から湧き出す水に狂喜し、何やら汲んでいたことは記憶に残っていた。その泉の周りには、クローバーが密集して群生していた。

――再生の命、というものなのだろうか。

エルマが汲んだ水は三つに分けられ、透明、紫、黄色のシリンダー・ペンダントにそれぞれ収められた。そのうち紫のシリンダーを、惑星ネオ・エーテルへ避難した妹リセルに届けてほしい――エルマはそう、ヒューに静かに頼んだ。

モーヴの町には仕事が山ほどある。国会議事堂とそれに付随する行政機関、そして公園をようやく完成させたばかりだ。次は図書館だ。丁寧に、豪勢に作らねばならない。なにしろ惑星ネオ・エーテルの存在意義は、銀河帝国の全歴史の辞書編纂にある。その名は――「アーカイヴ」。

仕事を早めに切り上げ、公園沿いの道を自宅へ向かって歩いていた。

萌葱色の霧雨。大地が霞んでいた。

公園の中はなだらかな谷になっていて、泉のせせらぎが聞こえ、小鳥が囀っていた。木々は深い緑に染まり、大空には虹がかかっていた。

その虹を見上げている少女がいた。

物思いに耽るような、憂いを帯びた佇まい。

「エルマ」

声に出していたのかどうか、自分でもわからなかった。その瞬間、脳裏に鮮やかに蘇ったのは――荒れた小さな島で、クローバーを摘んでいたエルマの姿だった。

目を戻した時、少女の姿はもう、どこにもなかった。

She gazed at the surface of the water for a moment, then continued quietly.

"I'm going to divide this water into three portions and carry them to where they need to go. The first — to Askshion on Planet Lilinas. The second — to the newborn planet where the companions of Mr. Homogene now dwell. And the third — this is what I'd like to ask of you. Please deliver it to Planet Neo-Ether, the world where my sister lives, the star where grandfather's companions are making their new home."

Then, as if suddenly remembering, she lifted her face.

"Oh — and there was a four-leaf clover, too!"

Elma placed a single leaf upon her palm and gazed at it intently.

"I think I've come to understand the meaning of this clover. The meaning carried by its three leaves — perhaps they all point to one and the same thing. Each person stands as an individual, holding a pride that belongs to them alone. And yet, perhaps it is within the act of living together with others that true happiness is found."

She smiled, with just a touch of shyness.

"……Or perhaps that's just my imagination running away with me."

任務は何事もなく完了した。

放射線防御シールドの膜に守られながら、二人は荒涼とした地球の大地に足を踏みしめていた。ヒューは惑星エアルトの風景をぼんやりと眺めていたが、走り回って遊ぶエルマの姿を見ているうちに、その目を大きく見開いた。まるで、もう一つの任務のことなど、すっかり忘れてしまったかのようだった。

だが、彼の記憶に残ったものがある。

それは、地面の裂け目から湧き出る水を見つけて歓喜し、夢中になって両手ですくい上げるエルマの姿だった。そして、その泉の周囲には、一面に濃く青々としたクローバーが群生していた。

これこそが、再生の生命というものなのだろうか。

「ご協力、本当にありがとうございました。クレジット・バッグさん」

集めた水の入った容器を抱えながら、エルマは静かに言った。その瞳には、まだ興奮の光が残っていた。

「それにしても、本当に驚きました。この惑星全体は放射線に満ちているのに、この水だけはまったく汚染されていなかったんです。それに、この島全体がクローバーで覆われているなんて……どうしても不思議に思えてしまいます。」

彼女はしばらく水面を見つめ、それから静かに続けた。

「私はこの水を三つに分けて、それぞれ必要な場所へ運ぼうと思います。一つ目は、惑星リリナスのアスクシオンへ。二つ目は、ホモジーンさんの仲間たちが暮らしている新しい惑星へ。そして三つ目――これはあなたにお願いしたいんです。私の姉が暮らしている世界、祖父の仲間たちが新たな故郷としている星、惑星ネオ・エーテルへ届けてください。」

そして、ふと思い出したように顔を上げた。

「あっ、それから、四つ葉のクローバーもあったんですよ！」

エルマは一枚の葉を掌に乗せ、それをじっと見つめた。

「私は、このクローバーの意味が少し分かった気がするんです。四枚の葉が持つ意味―きっと、そのすべては同じことを指しているんじゃないでしょうか。人はそれぞれが独立した存在で、自分だけの誇りを持っています。でも、本当の幸せというのは、他の誰かと共に生きることの中にあるのかもしれません。」

彼女は少しだけ照れくさそうに微笑んだ。

「……まあ、ただの私の思い込みかもしれませんけどね。」

The place where Elma, having realized her end was near, summoned me was the planet Ios. (Galactic Calendar 10109)

A cold world starved of light. Beyond its thin atmosphere, a red sun pulsed faintly in the distance.

Lying in bed, Elma looked at my face and smiled softly.

"You look just like your grandmother..."

Her voice trembled slightly in the freezing air.

"You've heard the story about Grandmother Dora throwing ten men aside in an instant to protect Lambda, haven't you? It wasn't exaggerated. She really was as powerful as the wind."

I nodded silently. Elma continued.

"On the other hand, your mother, Risel... I heard she was beautiful and kind. I wish I could have met my younger sister..."

Her gaze drifted into the depths of distant memories.

"And those four flowers... actually—"

She stopped herself and gently shook her head.

"Don't be sad. Even after I'm gone, my dream won't disappear. I want to entrust its continuation to you."

The whisper brushed softly against my right ear, leaving behind a trace of warmth.

Just before her final breath, I thought I saw two figures standing in the shadows of the room. One of them seemed to be quietly sobbing.

But before I could make certain, Elma's chest rose and fell for the last time.

Her consciousness faded away.

Galactic Calendar 10068.

Aboard the ancient vessel Sympatic Harvey, secretly launched from the planet Lillinas by the Anti-Quantum Law Group, Hugh Donack opened his eyes.

"...Where am I? Where's Mr. Homogemy? Where's Professor Griss?"

The moment I awoke, I found myself shouting.

An unfamiliar ceiling. The smell of metal. The low hum of engines.

"Finally awake, Hugh?"

Turning around, I saw a short-haired girl standing with her arms crossed. Her eyes were sharp, yet somehow friendly.

"I thought you'd be skinnier. You're packed tighter than a credit bag."

"...Who are you?"

"I'm Elma. Mr. Homojemy asked me to bring you here. I'm the granddaughter of Lambda Griss. This is the Ark of the Archive. We're heading for Planet Eart—Earth. It'll be just the two of us... so, nice to meet you."

"Planet Eart—Earth?! Not Neo-Aether?! What on earth is happening ...?! "

My voice echoed through the narrow cabin and faded away.

"It's our homeworld."

Elma shrugged and slowly stepped closer, looking as though she were about to explain everything.

Could the future Elma saw and the 'heart' carried by Earth be one and the same?

「祖母ドーラがラムダを守るために、十人の男を一瞬で投げ飛ばした話、聞いているでしょう？　あれは誇張じゃないのよ。あの人は、本当に風みたいに強かった」

私は黙ってうなずいた。エルマは続ける。

「それとは反対に、あなたのお母さん――リセルは、とても美しくて、優しい人だったと聞いてる。妹には……逢いたかったわ」

エルマの視線が、遠い記憶の奥へ沈んでいく。

「それから……あの四本の花ね、実は――」

言いかけて、彼女は小さく首を振った。

「……悲しまないで。私がいなくなっても、私の夢は消えない。あなたに、その続きを託したいのよ」

その囁きは、私の右耳にそっと触れ、温度を残した。

息を引き取る直前、部屋の影に二つの人影が立っていた気がした。片方は、すすり泣いていたようにも思える。

だが、確かめる前に、エルマの胸は静かに上下を止めた。
